Why the Together Outside program?

When a person goes to prison, the consequences of their incarceration can be felt beyond the individual. The impact can heavily affect the family as they become vulnerable to the social, financial, and emotional distresses that follow. Especially in cases when the primary source of family support is lost to incarceration, the responsibilities of maintaining the household and raising the children falls upon the single parent left behind. The family also continue to experience stigmatisation and social isolation from the general community due to this situation – which often feeds into an intergenerational cycle of crimes and incarceration.

Through this program, we hope to support Muslim inmates and their family members outside to help them integrate back into the Muslim community in the best way possible. We aim to achieve this by providing access to appropriate support for the families, and the inmates released, so we can break the cycle of crimes and incarceration in the future.

Who is this program for?

The Together Outside program will be designed to provide support for the families of Muslim inmates who are currently incarcerated (put in jail) or have been released. We will also be working with our partners to directly support the Muslim inmates who are isolated and suffer injustice due to lack of support during their time in prison, and even during their recovery after coming out.

Support provided through this program includes, but is not limited to, financial support, activities to improve the family’s wellbeing, extracurricular activities for the children, up-skilling workshops for carers/parents, mentoring services for the inmates, community support groups to help the family outside, counselling services and more.
