When a Brother Needs Support

Bilal is a young man living in Melbourne with his brother.

He has experienced family violence, mental health challenges, and periods of unemployment.

Following a serious family incident, Bilal lost his job and was placed in temporary accommodation arranged through a local mosque. When that arrangement ended, he and his brother secured a small rental property together using limited savings, in order to avoid homelessness.

Bilal is currently unemployed and has no stable income. He is awaiting Centrelink support.

He has been experiencing ongoing mental health challenges, including panic episodes and periods of depression, which have affected his ability to maintain consistent employment.

He is connected with a GP care plan and receives psychological support. Despite this, his condition fluctuates, and there are periods where he is unable to function normally or attend to daily responsibilities.

His brother provides full-time informal support. He is employed and covers most household expenses, including rent, food, petrol, and medication costs when needed.

Financial records show limited income between them, small contributions from friends and family, and no capacity for savings.

When Bilal’s brother reached out to the National Zakat Foundation, he explained that Bilal had no income at the time and was still waiting for Centrelink payments to commence. He also highlighted that meeting basic living costs was becoming increasingly difficult.

NZF assessed his application and provided a crisis living payment to support essential needs during this transitional period.

This assistance helped cover basic living expenses while he awaited Centrelink support and continued his medical care.
