Supporting a Student Through Hardship

Omar was 27 when he moved into a small room in Perth following a family breakdown. It was his first time living independently, and he was determined to rebuild his life on stable ground.

He enrolled at TAFE to complete his Year 10 equivalent, attending classes during the week and working toward the possibility of a future career. For Omar, education represented a second chance.

But life on a modest JobSeeker payment left very little room for anything beyond the basics.

Over time, small financial pressures began to build. An overdue electricity bill arrived. At the same time, a personal debt surfaced, money he owed a friend who had helped him during his move. Together, the obligations became overwhelming.

Omar began cutting back on essentials. Meals were skipped. Food intake was reduced to stretch what little remained. Still, the gap between income and expenses continued to widen.

“I’m barely living with this payment,” he wrote. “I’m really struggling at the moment.”

The financial pressure did not stay in the background. It began to affect his studies. It is difficult to focus in class or prepare for exams when basic stability is uncertain, and when every unopened letter feels like another demand you cannot meet.

When Omar reached out to the National Zakat Foundation, he was looking for relief from immediate pressure so he could continue moving forward.

Through local Zakat support, NZF was able to assist with his overdue utility bill and help ease the burden of his small debt. The support did not change his circumstances overnight, but it eased his financial pressure and allowed him to continue his education without constant financial stress.

Omar’s situation reflects many young people trying to rebuild after disruption: studying, working, and attempting to create stability in unfamiliar circumstances.
