The Silent Toll of Dialysis

Hamza has lived in Sydney for more than a decade with his wife and two daughters. He has relied on casual work and community support, but after his kidneys failed, dialysis became part of his weekly routine. Three sessions a week, around five hours each.

Hamza recently received permanent residency, but he still had years to wait before becoming eligible for Centrelink. His health also meant he was unable to work.

With no regular income, he was struggling to cover rent, food, transport and medication, and began falling behind on his rent.

Hamza reached out to National Zakat Foundation Australia for support with his rent, medication and groceries. His case was assessed under the Fuqara category, recognising his financial hardship and limited ability to earn.

NZF was able to provide rent assistance and essential living assistance, giving Hamza some financial stability while he continued dialysis and managed his health.

Hamza’s story is a reminder that financial hardship can affect people in our own community including those who may be dealing with serious health issues while trying to support their families.
