Living Out of a Car

Hafsa is a mother of five who had to leave her previous home because it was no longer safe for her family. With nowhere else to go, she and her children were temporarily living in their car.

Hafsa is currently unemployed and receives Centrelink. She had already received short-term crisis accommodation, but that support was ending before long-term housing became available. Housing services had confirmed they would assist, but there was no confirmed date or address yet.

In the meantime, Hafsa needed somewhere safe for her family to stay. With five children to support, she could not afford motel accommodation on Centrelink alone.

Hafsa reached out to National Zakat Foundation for help with emergency accommodation. Her situation was assessed under the Needy category, and local Zakat was used to provide financial assistance for accommodation while she waited for long-term housing.

This meant Hafsa and her children no longer had to sleep in their car while waiting for their new home. NZF will also follow up with support for bond, rent and food once permanent housing is secured.

Local Zakat gave the family a safe place to stay during a difficult transition, while helping them move towards more stable housing.
