When Divorce Took Everything But His Faith

December 3, 2025

Kareem sat on the edge of a thin mattress on his parents’ floor, staring at the phone he was borrowing from a friend, wondering how he had ended up with almost nothing again.

A year ago, Kareem thought life in Brisbane was finally settling. He had married, bought a second hand car, and was hustling, buying and selling parts online to stay afloat. When the marriage collapsed, it did not just break his heart, it wiped out his basics. He left the home without his clothes, his bed, even his laptop. An intervention order meant he could not go back for any of it.

Living with his elderly mother, Kareem tried to keep contributing to rent, groceries and taking them to medical appointments, even while managing a lifelong hip condition and waiting years for surgery. He borrowed from friends, and did whatever work he could find, but the truth was simple, he had a small surplus on paper and still could not afford a proper bed or clothes to restart his life.

When Kareem reached out to National Zakat Foundation, he was not asking for luxury. He asked if the community could help him with a bed, some clothes and a basic device so he could start a diploma in community services and move forward. After a thorough financial assessment, NZF recognised him as miskeen (the Needy), someone whose income covered only the bare minimum and left no room for essential items.

Through local Zakat in Australia, NZF provided funding towards a proper bed, clothing and core essentials so Kareem could sleep with dignity and prepare for his studies.

In his message back, full of gratitude, he promised that once he was standing again, he would be the one giving, not asking.

Your Zakat. His Right.

Kareem’s story is a reminder that those in need here look just like you, a young man in our suburbs trying to study, care for his parents and rebuild after loss. Local Zakat became his safety blanket, helping him stabilise so he can give back to the same community that caught him.

This is Zakat in Australia, building local community one quiet restart at a time.
