She Carried Them Across the World

March 23, 2026

She did not have time to take much. When Samira fled her home country in 2025, she left with her four children, their passports, and their phones. Her husband had been killed in the conflict. There was nothing else to take.

They made their way through several countries before eventually reaching Melbourne, arriving on humanitarian grounds. Samira was in her early forties, widowed, with four children aged seven, fourteen, fifteen and eighteen. She spoke very little English. She knew almost no one. She had no income, no rental history, and no savings left after the journey.

"We left with nothing except our phones and passports," she wrote in her application. "We need help to rent a house and provide my kids with the main necessities of life."

The cost of resettlement was immediate and relentless. Government payments were still being processed. Her income support was being reduced. She was simultaneously trying to secure housing in a city where landlords require references, income, and proof of stability, none of which she had.

Her caseworker noted that she was overwhelmed, trying to manage housing, immigration paperwork, and grief while keeping four children fed and functional. NZF allowed the case to remain open, giving her time to gather documents without adding pressure to an already impossible situation.

When she was ready, NZF provided Ramadan support, a voucher for household essentials, and Back to School assistance for her children. The support was modest in dollar terms. In the life of this family, it was a lifeline.

Her youngest was seven years old. He had spent much of his childhood in a warzone. He was now starting school in suburban Melbourne.

Your Zakat. Their Right.

Samira does not speak much English yet. You might pass her at the shopping centre, her children in tow, quietly navigating a country she never planned to move to. She is Hidden in Plain Sight, carrying a grief most of us cannot imagine, rebuilding a life from nothing in a country still unfamiliar.

Because of local Zakat, she did not face her first Ramadan in Australia alone. Her children went to school with what they needed. A widow who had lost everything was reminded that the Muslim community she had fled to was real, present, and paying attention.
