The Uber Driver Who Could Not Drive

March 9, 2026

Irfan had been driving Uber to support his family. It was not glamorous work, but it was steady, and it was his. His wife, Salina, was on a bridging visa and not permitted to work. Their two children were toddlers. Everything rested on him.

Then, getting out of his car one afternoon, he twisted his ankle badly. The injury was enough to take him off the road for three weeks. Three weeks without driving meant three weeks without income. There was no sick leave, no workers compensation, no savings to draw on.

"I have no other choice but to request assistance from the Zakat department," he wrote in his application. He was on a bridging visa, ineligible for government support. He had borrowed money from a friend to make it through, but the rent had gone unpaid. The arrears now stood at close to $2,000, and his landlord had issued a notice to vacate.

The deadline was Monday at 4pm.

NZF caseworkers called Irfan, reviewed his documents and confirmed the eviction notice. A medical certificate confirmed the ankle injury. His bank statements showed the sudden absence of income in the weeks after the accident. The account had gone from regular Uber deposits to almost nothing.

Everything the client had described checked out. There were no red flags. There was a father with two small children, a wife who could not legally work, and a notice to vacate that would take effect in days.

NZF approved rental arrears support to keep the family in their home. Additional assistance was provided to cover the broader financial shortfall, along with a Ramadan support payment. Irfan had returned to driving within weeks and was working to stabilise the household.

He called the caseworker when he heard the news. He was very thankful.

Your Zakat. Their Right.

Irfan is the man driving you home from the airport, the one you barely notice as you read your messages in the back seat. His children are at home, cared for by a mother who is waiting for paperwork. He is Hidden in Plain Sight, in every city, in every rideshare queue.

Because of local Zakat, a brief injury did not become a permanent loss. A family of four did not lose their home. A father returned to work knowing his children still had a roof over their heads.

Names and places may have been changed to protect the identity of clients where appropriate.
