Safe but Still Struggling
Khalil arrived in Australia in June 2024 with his wife, three young children, and mother-in-law. Like many families escaping Gaza, he came seeking safety, stability, and the hope of building a better future for his family.
For seven months, Khalil and his family were supported through our Gaza Assistance Program. This gave them some breathing space as they began to adjust to a new life in Australia. But once the program ended, they were left facing the overwhelming pressures of Australia’s high cost of living on their own.
Today, they live together in a small granny flat. Khalil is doing everything he can by actively applying for jobs while studying English at TAFE alongside his wife to improve their chances of work. But with his Centrelink application still pending and no regular income, the family has been surviving with the help of a kind friend who has stepped in to cover some expenses.
Despite his determination, Khalil’s situation is dire. With only $1,000 in assets, and essential monthly expenses of over $3,800, he is left with a growing deficit he cannot close on his own. Rent, food, and basic needs weigh heavily on his shoulders as he worries about how to provide for his family.
Khalil falls under the 'needy' category of Zakat. Supporting him and his family is not just an act of kindness, it is his right to your Zakat.
After struggling so hard to find safety and stability in Australia, we don’t want families like Khalil’s going through these hardships either.
