Dignity in Life & Death

December 26, 2025

Yasin sat in his quiet Sydney apartment, the silence broken only by the hum of a small heater he could barely afford to run. He gazed at his hands, the same hands that had navigated taxis through Australian streets for over twenty years to give his two daughters a better future. He had fought a long, painful battle for joint custody after a difficult divorce, earning the right to be a father for half of their lives. Then, one day, while driving his taxi, he suffered a sudden heart attack. He could no longer endure the long hours of work, and as a result, the bills began to mount.

Local Zakat was his safety net. When a five-week rental debt threatened both his home and his right to see his children, NZF stepped in to keep his home a safe haven for his girls. Later, when his asthma made the winter air unbearable, Zakat covered the electricity bills, giving him the warmth he needed to breathe.

The most profound expression of this support came when Yasin’s journey in this life ended. He passed away alone, with no family present and no funds to his name.

For over a month, his body lay in a hospital morgue, with the heartbreaking risk of a state cremation looming if he remained unclaimed.

Concerned members of a local masjid noticed that Yasin had gone missing. After making enquiries, they discovered his passing and urgently reached out to NZF for support. When NZF was contacted, our team immediately recognised his name. We knew Yasin and his circumstances; we had supported him before. The news of his passing deeply saddened our staff, who remembered his struggles and his unwavering love for his daughters, even though he had eventually grown estranged from them.

Through your Zakat, the NZF team stepped in to ensure this brother was not forgotten. Zakat was used to fund and coordinate his burial, ensuring Yasin was washed, shrouded, prayed over, and laid to rest with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Your Zakat. Yasin’s Right.

Zakat in Australia is not a one-off transaction, but a lifelong promise. It means standing by a brother from his hardest days on the road to his final moments of rest, ensuring that no one in our community is ever left alone, in life or in death.
