A Young Father Facing Illness and Hardship

April 2, 2025

Kamran is a young husband and father to a toddler. Last year, his life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Forced to stop working, Kamran was left struggling to support his small family.

With a monthly income of just $1,400, and rent alone costing $1,600, the numbers simply didn’t add up. Groceries, utilities, essentials every month, Kamran was falling behind by at least $600.

To make things even harder, Kamran’s wife, who is not yet a permanent resident, doesn’t qualify for Centrelink support. With rising costs and no steady income, Kamran found himself overwhelmed, emotionally and financially.

He admitted he was falling into depression, unsure how to cope with the mounting pressure.

But Kamran had something the system couldn’t offer: the right to your Zakat.

Kamran’s situation falls clearly under the “needy” category of those eligible for Zakat—those struggling to meet their basic living needs.

Through your Zakat, NZF provided two months of fortnightly Cost of Living payments.

This urgent support gave Kamran breathing space, helping cover essentials while he focused on his health and caring for his family.

When someone is too sick to earn, Zakat steps in. Your Zakat lifted the burden Kamran was carrying and gave him hope when he needed it most.

Essential Support (Cost of Living)

Every month, NZF receives an average of 240 Zakat applications from individuals and families struggling to keep up with the increasing cost of living. These include single parents, refugees, international students, and others experiencing sudden or ongoing hardship. In the past year alone, NZF has distributed over $2.5 million through our Essential Support Program to help ease this burden — that's more than $200,000 every month supporting those in urgent need.
