Kaffarah in Islam: How to fix mistakes and please Allah

By Sh. Ahmed Mostafa

What is Kaffarah?

The Arabic word Kaffarah (Also written as Kafara or Ramadan Kaffara), meaning expiation or compensation is a beautiful way that Allah has given us to fix our serious mistakes. Whether the mistake was done on purpose or by accident, Kaffarah allows us to make up for it through good actions. It is a path that helps us clean our hearts, seek forgiveness, and return to Allah. It also helps us balance our spiritual life and strengthen our relationship with Him.

Types of Kaffarah

Islamic scholars have explained that Kaffarah usually involves one or more of the following actions:

  1. Freeing a slave (in earlier times).
  2. Feeding poor people.
  3. Giving clothes to those in need.
  4. Fasting.

When is Kaffarah required?

Let’s look at some situations where Kaffarah is necessary.

1. Kaffarah for intercourse during Ramadan

If a man has intercourse with his wife during the day in Ramadan:

  • His fast is broken.
  • He must make up that day and offer Kaffarah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Free a slave; if not, then fast for two consecutive months; if not, then feed sixty poor people."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Order of Kaffarah

  1. Free a slave.
  2. If not possible: Fast for two months in a row.
  3. If not possible: Feed 60 poor people (about 750g of food each = 45 kg total).

2. Kaffarah for deliberately eating or drinking in Ramadan

  • According to most scholars, if someone eats or drinks on purpose, they should make up the fast but no Kaffarah is required (unless it was intercourse).
  • The person should repent and try to increase good deeds.

3. Kaffarah for Zihār (Hurtful words to the Wife)

Zihār is when a man tells his wife something like:
"You are to me like my mother’s back."

This is wrong in Islam. If he wants to return to normal relations with his wife, he must give Kaffarah.

Allah says: "...then (the penalty) is to free a slave before they touch each other... But whoever does not find (a slave), then he must fast two consecutive months... and if unable, then feed sixty poor people."Surah Al-Mujādilah, 58:3–4

Order of Kaffarah

  1. Free a slave.
  2. If not possible: Fast for two consecutive months.
  3. If not possible: Feed 60 poor people.

You can’t skip a step unless you truly cannot do it.

4. Kaffarah for breaking an oath

As mentioned in the ayah below, breaking a covenant is a grievous mistake that needs expiation.

If someone makes a promise to Allah or swears an oath, and then breaks it,

"...the expiation is feeding ten poor people... or clothing them... or freeing a slave. But if he cannot afford it, then he must fast three days."

Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:89

5. Kaffarah for killing an animal during Ihram

If someone kills a wild animal while wearing ihram during Hajj or Umrah, options are,

  1. Sacrifice a similar animal in the Haram.
  2. Feed the poor with food equal in value.
  3. If unable, fast one day for every measure of food not given.

Allah says, "whoever among you kills game intentionally, the penalty is an offering similar to what he killed..."

Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:95

Difference between Fidyah and Kaffarah

Many people wonder about the difference between Fidyah and Kafarah, as both are forms of compensation for missed acts of worship, such as missed obligatory fasting in Ramadan or violations of Ihram during Hajj and Umrah. Kafarah is required when someone deliberately breaks a rule such as having intercourse with their wife during the day in Ramadan or knowingly violating Ihram conditions and is considered a serious penalty. In contrast, Fidyah applies to those who are unable to fast due to chronic illness or old age. Understanding the difference is important to ensure the correct form of compensation is given.

Breaking a fast intentionally during Ramadan is considered a serious act, and this is where Kaffarah for breaking fast applies. The obligation of Ramadan Kaffarah underscores the importance of observing the fast sincerely and making amends if one falls short.

Feed a poor person for each missed Ramadan fast day.

Can Kaffarah be paid in cash?

  • Most scholars (Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali): No, it should be given as food.
  • Some scholars (like the Abu Hanifa, Al-Awazi and Ibn Taymiyyah:): Yes, money is allowed.

Best view:
Food is the original method. But giving cash is okay if it helps the poor more as supported by scholars like Abu Hanifa, Al-Awazi and Ibn Taymiyyah.

Can Kaffarah be sent to another country?

  • Main rule: Kaffarah should be given in the country where the mistake happened.
  • Exception: It can be sent to another place if there is greater need, like areas suffering from war, famine, or disasters.

Can you pay Kaffarah Online?

Currently NZF Australia do not facilitate Kaffarah payments online. However, there are several organisations in Australia that that allow Muslims to pay Kaffarah online.

The wisdom behind Kaffarah

For you:

  • Brings you closer to Allah.
  • Teaches self-control and patience.
  • Encourages you to repent and improve.
  • Makes you more generous and mindful.

For the community:

  • Helps the poor and needy.
  • It builds kindness and unity.
  • Frees people from harm (historically, from slavery).

Summary

Kaffarah is a gift from Allah to help Muslims fix their serious mistakes through fasting, feeding the poor, or other good deeds. It helps us grow spiritually, ask for forgiveness, and become better people. At the same time, it supports others in need and brings the community together. Through Kaffarah, we not only fix what we did wrong we also build a stronger connection with Allah and show care for others.
